The Respiratory Department comprises 20 consultants, a CNS team of 7 nurses, and a 7 strong physiology team.
We support both inpatients and outpatients, act as a secondary and tertiary referral centre and have a strong emphasis on integrated respiratory care aligned with the NHS England Long Term Plan and local priorities, whilst integrating cutting edge research and maximising training opportunities. Led by Dr Rónan Astin, we have experts in most respiratory fields. We are an internationally leading cancer service which includes a large lung cancer screening service, and we are nationally leading in ILD, complex lung infection, and integrated care for airways disease. We also engage in extensive well-funded clinical and basic science research programmes through strong links with UCL Respiratory.
Our department offers a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient medical service for adults with conditions affecting the lungs.

The department has a strong academic basis and is active in basic science and clinical research. We are closely aligned with UCL respiratory, conducting ground breaking research on the molecular mechanisms, diagnosis, and management of the major lung diseases, including lung infections, Interstitial Lung Diseases, and more.
