We have 21 orthopaedic consultants who specialise in a range of routine and specialist areas, including upper limb, lower limb, complex hip and hand and wrist.

We also have an unrivalled sports injury clinic that runs twice weekly, with physiotherapist support within the clinic setting. Our clinic waiting times are short and we can offer fast access to subsequent treatment.

We care for patients with the following conditions or injuries:

  • Cartilage defects that require transplantation
  • Crush injuries
  • Hip and knee replacements
  • Deformities
  • Failed joint replacement
  • Impingement
  • Infected bones and joints
  • Knee ligament injuries including cruciate and anterior ligament reconstruction
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sports injuries
  • Bunions and other foot and ankle conditions
  • Hand and shoulder injuries

Outpatient appointments: Most patients undergoing surgery will have their initial and follow-up consultations with the surgeon in outpatients at UCLH.

Fracture Clinic: Orthopaedics provides a full fracture clinic service for emergency patients who have visited UCLH, or other, Emergency departments. This service takes place at University College Hospital, Lower ground floor. The service runs two clinics daily.

Virtual Fracture Clinic: UCLH offers a virtual fracture clinic service for patients who have attended the UCLH Emergency Department with an injury. Their case is reviewed by a multi-specialist team including consultants and specialist physiotherapists. Following this review, patients either receive a call from a clinician to give advice on their injury, or a clinic pathway co-ordinator will call if the patient needs to attend the fracture clinic.

Elective (planned) surgery: Our elective (planned) surgery takes place in our new facility on Grafton Way Building. This new hospital has eight theatres dedicated to elective orthopaedic and ear, nose and throat and oral surgery.

There is a dedicated area for patients to recover from their surgery and a ward for those who may need to stay over night.

Unplanned and emergency surgery (trauma): This surgery takes place at University College Hospital.

Sports injuries: Patients with sports injuries will be treated by UCLH clinical teams at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH) located on the second floor, 170 Tottenham Court Road.
